Ebay ripit2/21/2023 ![]() Like so many others posting here, Craigslist and Marketplace is where I go to sell. plus you now get nailed for sales tax on eBay. You would think eBay has an algorithm that would notice a 22 year eBay member has reduced their activity to 1% of what it was 10 years ago.maybe they do and just don't care.įor SELLING the fees are so outrageous the only people getting a good deal is eBay.įor BUYING, item prices are now so inflated because buyers are trying to cover all the costs and fees that there are very few deals on eBay. If your bank kept your checking account this way you would find a new bank.įor years, I had 250-500 eBay transactions every year both buying and selling. Instead of grouping all the components and fees of a transaction under a single heading, to make review/auditing easy, they list data entries in the monthly invoice that are difficult to follow and link to a specific transaction AND they will have fees listed (for the same item) across two different (monthly) invoices making it even more difficult to follow and see how bad the fees are that eBay charges. IMO eBay has deliberately created a disjointed accounting system of fees and costs you pay. I received $170 after I paid the fees and shipping. I sold a baseball glove on eBay and the buyer ended up paying a total of $225. When I asked her to put the script down and just give me her thoughts as a human being (not an eBay drone) she could not justify any of it. When I raised this to a customer service rep on the phone she clearly had the prewritten script in front of her to read. Sellers realize no financial gain from sales taxes and shipping costs, yet eBay feels good about charging 12.55% of both in addition to 12.55% of the items selling price. But even more criminal is that eBay charges 12.55% fee on the sales tax plus a 12.55% fee of the shipping cost. Is this how they conduct their business? If so it's no secret why their annual revenue exceeds a whopping TEN BILLION dollars and why there are buyer and seller complaints. I do not recommend eBay for either buyers or sellers. ![]() ![]() After figuring in the shipping costs I paid and PayPal's fees I could have thrown away the items I sold and not been much worse off. If their "final fees" stand their share will approach 20% of my proceeds. Many small businesses - including mine prior to my retirement - are happy with a 6% profit. Now - in what are likely my last ever interactions with eBay - they have falsely stated their selling fees and want to charge me undisclosed "final fees" that are exorbitant. eBay has been no help whatever in resolving these issues and their "buyer protection" is a joke. My first few experiences with eBay were generally positive but the last several have involved fraud, false advertising and refusal of sellers to take back defective and falsely advertised items. I first used eBay in 1997 and have nominally been a "member" - albeit an occasional buyer and seller - since that time. ![]()
